Three Reasons to Believe What I Say

Reason one: I have gotten amazing results by switching to a raw food diet. However, I've had my share of trials and tribulations with this diet. I've been eating and researching the raw food diet for 8 years. From 1996 till 2001, I failed at going 100% raw at least 5 times. I still ate the majority of my diet as raw, but going 100% and maintaining it was a challenge.

I've also had things go wrong and wish I had never made those kinds of experiments. I should have listened to the experts, but that was confusing, as the opinions of the experts differed so much. I was filled with misinformation, even though I've read extensively about nutrition since the early 80's.

I've done all the experimenting, so you don't have to. I've also learned from the mistakes of many of the raw food pioneers who had to figure most of this stuff out through their own experiments. Experimenting with your diet can be a dangerous thing. Sometimes you can develop health-related problems that are difficult to reverse but you won't know it until after your experiment.

Don't think you can safely eat any raw food and still stay healthy. There is a right way and a wrong way to eat raw. Yes, individuals do have to make adjustments to their diet. It's not because we are all different, but because we come to the raw diet in different states of health. Quite frankly, most of us have done tremendous damage to our bodies and a one-size fits all recommendation doesn't work. However, as raw foodists get healthier they should be working towards eating the Optimal Raw Food Diet that I and other top leaders in the raw food field recommend.

Taking supplements can also be dangerous. I know, I've done extensive experimentation with supplements, and sometimes I got results that damaged my health. When it comes to supplementation, you have to be very careful. For the most part, they did more harm than good. Virtually all the nutrients you need are available in abundance by eating a whole food, raw Vegan diet. In fact, there is no supplement that can pack the hundreds of thousands of vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, phytonutrients and other unknown nutrients that are only in whole plant foods. In addition, most nutrients won't work unless combined with 8 to 10 or more other nutrients. Nevertheless, supplements are useful in certain instances and should not be ruled out.

Reason two: My experience and background: I am an Author, Radiant Health Coach, Peak Performance Expert and creator of the Raw Health and Happiness Society Support Groups of New York and New Jersey.

I am not a doctor or even a certified nutritionist. I have, however, studied nutrition, health and fitness for over 20 years. Now, you're probably wondering how and why we can do all those things.

Let me explain with a case study of two people I know who wanted to consume a 100% raw food diet.

Case Study: Two people striving to go 100% raw; one fails and the other succeeds. Here is why.

The first person is called Joe and the second person Laura. They each have just read the same article about raw food in the newspaper. They both are very excited about the wonderful health benefits that they might be able to experience by eating a raw food diet.

What they do from here on is very different. They each take a different but diligent approach to eating a raw food diet.

Person Number One: Joe

Joe starts to read about the raw diet. He first reads "The Mucusless Diet Healing System," and then "Rational Fasting," by Arnold Ehret. He is so inspired by the amazing results that he decides to give eating only fruits and vegetables a try. Joe chose only fruits and vegetables because these were the only foods considered non-mucus forming.

Joe lasted about three days on his new raw food diet. The first thing he noticed was that it felt like his skin got a lot tighter as if he'd gotten a face lift. He also lost some weight and was more energetic. But he decided he didn't want to live like this.

He wanted to enjoy his food and thought that eating this way for the rest of his life would be incredibly boring. "Where is the flavor?" he asked himself. He didn't want to give up going out to restaurants and eating his favorite foods. This was his first attempt at eating a raw diet and it lasted only three days.

A year later, his nutritionally oriented M.D. suggested he read the book "Fit for Life." That book was a turning point for him. After doing extensive research on other diets, he was afraid of getting too much sugar from eating fruits. After reading "Fit for Life," he was convinced that fruits are the natural food for humans, not just snacks.

"Fit for Life," spoke of Natural Hygiene, Joe wanted to find out more about this health system. He figures they must be eating a 100% raw food diet because "Fit for Life," touted the benefits of raw fruits and vegetables.

Therefore, he looked up Natural Hygiene and found a school founded by T.C. Fry, that has a degree program in Natural Hygiene. Joe ordered "The Basic Health Library," which is an extensive, three volume, 8.5 x 11 inch series of books. In there are all sorts of viewpoints and articles providing an extensive and comprehensive education in the Natural Hygiene principles of health, including a raw diet and fasting.

Joe already had a fairly extensive background in reading books about nutrition. In fact, he read his first book on nutrition in 1982 called "Rapid Healing Foods," when he was 15 years old. He was attracted to that book because it promised a long and healthy life, full of vibrant energy and living disease-free into old age. Joe thought to himself that it was strange to be reading a book like this at his age. But he was planning back then to do anything possible to slow down the aging process.

Although the diet recommendations in that book were sweeping, Joe didn't make too many dietary changes. He stopped drinking soda and also stopped eating pork chops, to his Jewish mother's dismay. (His non-Kosher mother.)

But he really didn't come close to following what the book suggested. He recalled that the book had said his evening meal should consist of 80% raw food on the plate. Initially, Joe and his father were very enthusiastic about the book and went out to the supermarket to buy all sorts of fruits and vegetables. They also bought a juicer. Within a week that experiment was over. Joe quickly got bored of eating so many fruits and vegetables and juicing was too much work.

He figured why bother with eating all of these fruits and vegetables now. Maybe he'd do it once he got older. But he kept on drinking four glasses of chocolate milk per day, eating cold cuts, Porterhouse stakes, Manwhich Sloppy Joe Mix, hamburgers, pizza, Doritos, Shake and Bake, Hungryman TV Dinners and big bars of Hershey's Chocolate. For breakfast every morning, he had bread, butter and honey and also a bowl of cereal like Apple Jacks, Frosted Flakes and later on he got into stuff like Raisin Bran, Grape Nuts and Total. He loved eating Reese's peanut butter cups, York Peppermint Patties, and his favorite dessert was Breyer's Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream.

His father didn't seem to think there was too much wrong with eating like that. Instinctively, Joe thought it was unhealthy to eat this way, but was glad his father allowed it.

Joe was under the addictive influence of our cooked and processed foods and he didn't want to give them up. He also didn't know how to beat his addictions or that eating a raw food diet, would eventually taste wonderful to him. Why should he even bother changing his diet; he thought he was doing pretty well.

Well maybe he forgot that just the previous year he threatened to commit suicide and was in an extended state of depression. What about his laziness and frequent mood changes? What about that constant little feeling of fear inside of him? He thought these were normal things and had no idea that one-day he'd realize that diet was the cause of his problems.

Now let's get back to the adult Joe, as he is just finding out about Natural Hygiene. While reading the extensive "Basic Health Library," Joe decides to try going 100% raw Vegan again. He does quite well at first. He feels wonderful with his raw diet. There are so many benefits to eating raw.

Within the first month, he starts running into a few problems. The first problem is that he's getting very thin. He doesn't like the way he looks and thinks that he might not be getting enough protein. (This is a classic misunderstanding many people have when trying to go raw. This holds many people back.)

He's doing this 100% raw diet in the middle of winter and he notices that he's feeling exceptionally cold this winter. After a while, he can take a bite from a room temperature orange and it sends chills down his spine. Joe also notices that he has a lack of energy. He just doesn't have the energy to do as much in his workouts as he used to.

He reads extensively about detoxification symptoms in the books, but for some reason he doesn't think it applies to him. He thinks he's beyond the detoxification stage. Then he gets the flu. He learned in "The Basic Health Library," about fasting when you are sick. So he fasted and ate barely anything during this flu. Some days drinking nothing but water and other days eating a fruit here or there. It turned out to be the worst flu of his life. It ended up lasting six weeks.

Up to that time, the worst flu he ever had was only two weeks long. He had a horrible cough. Little did he know that he could have prevented being sick for six weeks by changing his diet. He was eating oranges almost exclusively as they were the most appealing to him.

Joe's body became too acidic. His feet were cramping all the time, but he just kept on his course. Only later did he learn about the cooling effects of citrus fruit and that he was probably very acidic. This made his body very weak and that is why the flu lasted as long as it did. He was detoxifying too quickly for his own good and he wasn't eating a balanced raw diet. But who was there to advise him? No one. He was doing it strictly from books.

After his flu was over, he started eating dried fruit, thinking it might give him more energy. He slowly recovered some of his energy. But it took over a year for his lungs to recover from the damage done by this very bad flu. He did himself quite a bit of damage. In fact, while eating raw in this way, he never fully recovered his strength and he had to admit that to himself. He just didn't have the energy to exercise the way he used to. Joe finally decided that the disadvantages outweighed the advantages with a 100% raw food diet.

This 100% raw experiment lasted for about three months. As soon as he added some cooked foods, he started feeling more energetic. He got warm again and of course, he loved the flavor. He also started gaining weight back. Little did he know at the time, that he was only gaining back fat and the toxins that are stored in the fat cells. He hadn't lost muscle due to eating a raw diet. Luckily, the negative effects of the cooked food hit him as well.

He still ate at least 50% raw because anything below that and his depression would come back almost immediately. Every time he had too much cooked food, his depression would kick in within 12 hours. There was no way around it. Luckily, he did fairly well with 50% raw foods. Of course the more he ate raw the better he felt. So he'd push it up to 80% raw.

But he would fluctuate quite a bit. It was very hard for him to stay at 80% raw. It wasn't until several years later that he stabilized his raw diet at an average of about 70% raw foods.

In the coming five years he tried going 100% raw at least 4 other times. Each time he'd last about 2 to 3 months eating this way. But something always got him off track. In the mean time, he had read many more books on the raw food diet and nutrition.

One of the diet books he followed for a few years was "Conscious Eating," by Dr. Gabriel Cousens. There was all sorts of information about Ayurveda, the different body types and how each person had to individualize his diet. The recommendations were complex and Joe followed many of the recommendations for his particular body type.

He started blending bananas with raw oat groats (which is raw oats) and putting in lots of Spirulina. Even with Dr. Cousens extensive recommendations, he wasn't able to successfully stay raw for more than three months.

At this point, Joe had come to the conclusion that he was one of those people who could not eat a 100% raw food diet. He figured that either genetics or adaptation to cooked food, didn't allow him to function his best on a 100% raw food diet.

So after doing extensive reading on nutrition in general and raw nutrition as well, he wasn't able to figure out how to succeed at being 100% raw. He also had done many raw food and supplement experiments during this time. These experiments didn't always improve his health as described above with his flu and other symptoms of poor health.

Person # Two: Laura

Laura's approach to going raw was quite different from person number one. Laura managed to find a raw food support group early on in her quest to eat a raw food diet. She also didn't mix and match raw food philosophies.

She became good friends with a 100% raw foodist named Jolene. Jolene was always encouraging her to go to meetings and wondered why she wasn't eating 100% raw yet. But she kept on getting that encouragement and support from her raw food mentor.

She was also scared of eating fruit because she was taught that the sugar in the fruit was dangerous for her. Laura had all sorts of misinformation and raw food myths rolling around in her head. She learned many of these myths from her reading of the raw food literature. It was hard to sort out who was telling the truth. She was very confused.

The confusion finally ended after attending a lecture by Dr. Douglas Graham. After that inspired lecture, Laura was sure she finally knew what she had to do to maintain a completely raw diet over the long haul. A couple of days later, she attended another one of his lectures. That lecture was all about exploding the myths people had about a raw diet. During the talk, the audience created a list of all the controversial issues and Dr. Graham systematically, thoroughly and convincingly answered each one. Laura was a changed person after that lecture as well.

The following week she planned a trip to Canada with her raw food mentor and she decided that she would now try to go 100% raw. With her mentor's help and with the right information in her head, she was able to maintain a totally raw diet. She finally broke through.

The key to the success of Laura versus Joe was that Laura had the support of real and live 100% raw foodists, not just books. She had a raw food mentor and support group. She not only read all the books, but she also attended the talks of raw food experts. The problem with books is that you can't ask them questions and get a response. I don't treat diet like a religion. It has to work first. I do extensive research and I provide you with that information either on the site directly or by supplying you with the links. There is a lot of confusion surrounding raw foods and nutrition in general. I want to give you 5 criteria or elements you absolutely, positively must have in any solution you arrive at:

Number One: Results, not Religion, are what count.

There are some Raw Food Diet educators out there who treat the raw food diet as a religion. It can be dangerous to your health if you also take this attitude.

Number Two: The Raw Food Diet you eat must provide all of your nutrient needs.

This is a complex issue. Suffice it to say that for 99.9% of the history of humans, we didn't even know about vitamins and minerals. We ate instinctively and our senses of taste and smell guided us as to what to eat.

But we also lived closer to nature, out in the wild and up until 10,000 years ago were gatherers with limited success at hunting. But we have eaten animal foods and insects for quite a long time.

We also know that there are no completely Vegan primates, even the bonobo apes (like chimpanzees but genetically closer to us) eat small mammals, insects and other kinds of animal foods. We can get virtually all of our nutrient needs met by eating fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. However to play it safe, I do recommend taking a B12 supplement. There is much new information in regards to this and, in this instance, it is safer to supplement than not. You can also have frequent blood tests, but I'd rather just play it safe and supplement in this one instance.

Fairly serious damage can accrue rather quickly by the body producing high homocysteine levels when it's b12 levels get too low.

Number Three: Support groups usually meet at most once a week and often only once a month.

It's also important to eat plenty of greens and occasionally nuts and seeds.

As long as you are relatively healthy, then eating fruit is the best food you can eat overall. Even if the fruits have been hybridized by man, they are still better than eating cooked meat, grains or even legumes.

Since we aren't in the wild and eating wild foods, there are some adaptations that have to be made for a modern or civilized raw food diet. But that doesn't mean you should automatically shun fruit. There is a tremendous amount of misinformation and bad talk when it comes to eating fruit. You'll learn the scientific truth about this on our site. You'll discover that the healthiest, thinnest and longest-lived people all eat a high carbohydrate diet.

Much more important is to keep the levels of fatty foods low in your diet.

There are some people who have some problems with some fruit and each case should be taken on an individual basis. But even diabetics do extremely well on a low fat, high fruit, raw food diet. In fact, in 20 years Dr. Graham has gotten all of his Type II Diabetic patients off insulin.

It's the fat that will actually keep your blood sugar levels elevated for excessively long periods. Beware of the misinformation out there on this.
